Think of the most common thing you see happening; cavities are that common because they are suffered by almost half of the world’s population. They are prevalent in kids and aged people, but anyone can get a cavity. Cavities are a pandemic because many people indulge in activities that cause it, such as consuming acidic foods and drinks.

What Is a Cavity? 

A cavity also referred to as caries, is the damage to a tooth caused by plaque formation. It begins with the demineralization and destruction of a tooth, starting from the outermost to the innermost layer. Symptoms of a cavity include tooth hypersensitivity, white and black spots on the affected tooth, holes, and foul odor. 

What Factors Cause Cavities?

The catalyst behind a decaying tooth is plaque, a sticky material formed from the residue of sugary food particles. Plaque formation is inevitable, but the actions that follow will determine whether you’ll suffer from tooth decay. Some actions and inactions that cause cavities include

  • Eating foods high in carbs. Acidic, sugary, and starchy foods stick to your teeth and are fed on by bacteria forming acidic plaque. 
  • Having inadequate oral hygiene. When you don’t brush as regularly as you should, at least twice daily, plaque remains on that tooth and triggers demineralization of its enamel. Also, when you don’t floss, some plaque might escape because flossing rids your teeth of plaque brushes can’t reach. 
  • Having a dry mouth. A dry mouth is a situation where a person doesn’t have enough saliva in their mouth. It could be due to an underlying condition or certain medications. Saliva performs essential mouth-cleaning functions, including ridding the mouth of bacteria. 
  • Inadequate amount of fluoride. Fluoride is crucial in preventing tooth decay; it remineralizes enamels and restricts harmful bacteria growth. So, a lack of a good amount of fluoride can cause tooth decay. 
  • Anorexia or other eating disorders. People who suffer from eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, or purging disorder tend to vomit food they’ve already consumed. Stomach acid reaches the teeth in the process and can weaken the enamel. 
  • Infant and elderly age bracket. Well, infants and the elderly are more prone to cavities. When infants are given a bottle around bedtime, the chances of them getting their teeth clean afterwards are slim. While they sleep, plaque formation goes on in their mouths. In the case of the elderly, they take several medications that may trigger certain conditions that’ll affect their teeth negatively. 
  • Deteriorating fillings. Different fillings have a time duration they can last for, and they may be shorter if you don’t take care of them as you should. When fillings begin to deteriorate, it is easy for plaques to form beneath them. Also, because of the state, the filling is in, it’ll be harder to get the plaque out, easily leading to tooth decay.
